Changing Careers Versus Changing Jobs
Doing something that you hate day in and day out can feel like a death sentence. The fact is, we spend a majority of our day at our jobs. So, if we dislike our job or hate what we do it can drag us down in other ways. The key to achieving happiness with the daily grind is to determine whether you hate your job or your career. Once you figure that out, you can take the steps necessary to change your job or career.
Take some time to evaluate how you feel about your current position by asking some questions of yourself. Do you like the people you work with? Are you underpaid? Do you enjoy performing the duties of the job? How do you like your boss? In fact, you may not need a career change at all, but only a new job at a different company. Once you eliminate the things you don’t like, your current job may suit you well if it were at a different company.
If you determine that you actually enjoy doing your current work, then you’ll likely have some decisions to make. Probably you will need to change your working environment and search for a similar position with another company. It would be a good idea to also consider extra training in order to advance in your current field of choice.
It may turn out that there is another job in your current field that suits your personality better, and if so, making your decisions would be easier. If you do decide that you just don’t like the job or the work, then it will be time for a career change. You will need to consider a different industry or business to begin your search.
Consider what you like doing and what you think you are good at. Use a two column pad with likes on one side and dislikes on the other. Doing this may provide some surprising results you didn’t realize about yourself. Career counselors can often help, even if only with an impartial ear to guide you. Do some internet research and find some free aptitude tests. Bottom line, if you are unhappy with your current working situation, you have choices.
