The Art of Dancing Ballet

Ballet is an amazing form of dancing. It’s more than just a dance style however, it’s an art form. It has technical movements and footwork that must be executed with precision and mastery, yet at the same time, it has to convey a sense of emotion that blends naturally with the music which accompanies the dance. Consequently the best ballet dancers don’t just have dancing skills; they are also accomplished in mime, singing and acting.

The history of ballet started from way back. Ballet started in the 1600s when dances were performed merely as an art. Through time, people have grown to like ballet that is why it has been considered as one of the most famous dance forms there is. At around this time, King Louis XIV founded the Acadmie Royale de Musique et de Danse in France. This made France the center for ballet at that time. As years passed, more and more people have developed a fondness for ballet. This is why more and more schools have become available worldwide to teach ballet. At present day, the ballet capital of the world is Russia.

What is a Ballet Dancer?

There are many varied definitions of what a ballet dancer is. One of the main skills that they need is to possess great poise and grace. Their movements should flow effortlessly from one to another portraying elegance. They should be able to interact silently with the audience, telling a story with their movements and expressions the audience can feel.

The first ballet dancers were men. They dressed as women to perform, but women were not allowed to dance for about 20 years after ballet first started to make its mark in France. Today, most of the ballet dancers are women, and our culture is such that boys are not encouraged into ballet. The common misconception is that ballet is for weaklings - and yet anyone who has attended a ballet training session for male dancers will tell you that ballet is a hard work-out that develops strength far greater than many more “macho” sports! Not only does it develop strength needed for lifting a ballerina during a dance routine, but it also promotes greater flexibility and muscle tone rather than just muscle mass.

Ballet dancing is a great way of keeping fit. The amount of training that is involved ensures that a ballet dancer has a well-toned body. Their healthy lifestyle means that they usually have a good metabolism and have above average stamina. The exercises to develop poise means that they stand, walk and sit correctly which means they look confident and don’t develop backache from bad posture.

Whether you are choosing to be a ballet dancer or not, you need to at least know how this worldwide phenomenon has gained popularity. In modern times, ballet is not just a theatre show, but has been incorporated in mainstream Hollywood movies like Billy Elliot which shows the life of a male ballet dancer. This is how far ballet has gone from being a short dance performed as an intermission in theatrical plays, until now where it has become one of the major dances that people are choosing to learn.
