Grief Recovery Counseling

May 25th, 2009

Back in my practice days I saw many individuals who were suffering the effects of grief and loss after having lost a close loved one. This could include a friend, spouse, child, partner, parent or other relative who had passed on suddenly due to illness or accident. Occasionally I was presented with a couple where one of them had recently received a terminal illness diagnosis and only had months to live. All of these situations were particularly traumatic in their own way.

These couples, with the terminally ill partner, needed to work through feelings about their situation and the practical steps necessary to prepare for the inevitable. The terminally ill partner seemed to have an easier time with the process once they had accepted the reality of their death. When my brother-in-law was diagnosed with terminal cancer, I witnessed the same effects taking place for he and my sister. Broadly speaking, it was always the surviving partner that had the toughest time.

With counselling of any sort, the goal is to LISTEN! Not just the hear the words an individual was speaking, but to identify the Feelings behind them. When I would reflect back to the individual I always began with sounds like youre feeling ” sad, angry, scared, anxious, depressed ” whatever it was they were conveying. I would then ask them to check in to see if what I said was accurate. It usually was.

As the client revealed a particular feeling, or set of feelings, I would instruct them to focus and describe them in more detail. That required that they pay closer attention to the feeling and address all its aspects including any physical reactions. More often than not, tears would begin to flow as the feeling was expressed and then released. The process of describing feelings in detail helps release their associated pain. This became the essence of my approach to grief recovery counseling. I called this stage “priming the pump.”

It was not unusual for clients to ask about Stages of Grief and/or some theory they had heard about in their research on the matter. As interesting as this might be, I would point out that anything that distracted them from their feelings was a waste of their recovery efforts. In contrast, anything that helped them focus on feelings would always be the most beneficial. After a few challenging sessions, where painful feelings were addressed and released, the client would realize that this was the path to recovery. Not only that, but learning to identify, describe and release feelings as a general practice, would have benefits far beyond their successful grief recovery.

We are programmed toward externals by our various sources of news that like to talk about charts, graphs, theories and stages. These tantalizing tidbits are geared toward boosting ratings or adding another “Top Ten Ways to Heal Grief” book to the self-help section of bookstores. A helpful grief recovery resource will focus on Internals, such as feelings and emotions, because that’s always where the hurt lies. Our Heart and Feeling Center determines the quality of our life and tells us when we are hurting. By focusing inward we identify and release feelings, along with the associated pain. Writing in a journal, listening to good music, reading heart-centered poetry will put you in touch with Your Heart because that’s where healing actually happens.

A well crafted grief recovery resource is second only to a good therapist as a guide to our grief recovery. For intense reactions you may need to start with a therapist. That aside, your grief recovery resource can provide all the guidance you need to navigate this experience. When we lose a loved one we experience powerful emotions and feelings that we are usually unaccustomed to. A good grief resource capitalizes on this and takes you further into the experience of loss. Yes it hurts, just like squeezing the poison out of an infected wound. But who would argue the end result. With permission to feel and the guidance of a good grief resource we can make our way through this experience. Our heart and feeling center know what to do once we engage this process.

Trying to apply externals to an internal problem is futile. It only serves to distract us from the real issue which our feelings will gladly tell us about. Thankfully, counselling and a well crafted book resource will re-acquaint you with your feeling state and guide you through the process of grief recovery, just as any good grief counsellor would.

Grief recovery counseling is fairly straightforward once you understand the process. Applying externals to an internal problem is futile. Talking about your pain is not the same as experiencing it which is what a good counselor and grief recovery resource would have you do. You now know that feelings are the key to your recovery. Feeling your bereavement and grief may be painful at times but that difficulty will be short-lived. Applying tools that focus on feelings and help release them will move your healing along. What you will be left with is the love you have for that deceased loved one, and that’s forever.

You can succeed in learning online, but you need to start by following these guidelines

March 28th, 2009

Globalization has made an enormous difference to the way we live and work, and I dont just mean the impact of petrol prices on our driving habits. Communicating with someone on the other side of the world is just as easy as communicating with someone next door. People change jobs more often than before, and jobs change just as frequently. And all these changes underscore the importance of education in this globalized, competitive, technology-driven, knowledge-based economy.

But education on-campus at university or college is not possible for many people because jobs or other commitments make it impossible for them to attend on-campus classes. Online learning provides a flexible solution for such people. Unfortunately, many learners enter an online program without realising the problems they need to face. Thus, all too often they are disappointed with their first experience of this new mode of learning. To avoid this, there are six things that the learner should watch out for.

Online education is a flexible form of education, but it doesnt mean that you can keep putting off your learning day after day. All too often, that is what often happens ” and this results in failure to learn. So be organised ” manage your time. Set aside a regular time in your diary for study of the material and completion of assignments.

Living and working in todays ever-changing world demands life-long learning. And so if you wish to continue to be part of it, you must have a desire to learn and be motivated to learn for the rest of your life. So this means wanting to learn even when there is no extrinsic motivation (e.g., a salary increase).

Unfortunately, many of us were taught to use rote learning at school. But other skills are needed to acquire meaningful knowledge. This means having well-developed critical reading and thinking skills. To be successful in learning online requires that you develop these skills. Many programs or colleges will provide a course to help you acquire such skills ” it would be well worthwhile taking it so that you do know how to learn.

For many of us, our school experience has taught us to be passive learners ” we were told the knowledge, we learned it by rote and then we repeated it in an exam. Passive learning seemed to be a useful strategy for success. Unfortunately, that is not a useful strategy for success in todays world, or, indeed, in online learning. If you are learning online, the courseware often includes questions, exercises and further reading so that your learning can be active rather than passive. You must make sure that you complete all the exercises and that you thoroughly interact with the material.

Lectures in high school classrooms and in undergraduate classes can all so easily encourage the passive learning already referred to. But real learning takes place when you are interacting with the materials and with others. So try to find a learning group, either in your area or online, and exchange ideas regularly. Also, make sure that you respond to all the e-Tutors requests for participation in the discussion forums. There may even be a mark allocated for such participation.

I recently heard of a government official who had his position taken away from him on the grounds that he hadnt earned his qualifications because they were from a diploma mill - a business that simply prints diplomas and degrees. He protested that he had earned them because he paid good money for them. You must always make sure that the online qualification you receive is from an accredited institution and the form of accreditation is recognised in your country. Never buy a qualification from a diploma mill.

The Importance Of Regular Credit Report Checks

February 7th, 2009

How often should you check your credit report? The simple answer is this: once a year. However, everyone is an individual with different circumstances, so one size does not fit all. For those with good credit, once a year may be enough. However, in this economy, many people are opening more accounts and dealing with other situations that would call for more frequent credit report checks. It is important to know when to check your credit report.

You may check your credit card and bank statements thoroughly every month, but in these times, that may not be enough to detect identity theft. When a thief opens a brand new account in your name, it won’t show up on your credit card bill, but you will see it on a credit report, since credit reports show new accounts that have been opened.

Receiving a phone call about debt you didn’t know you owed is not the best way to find out your identity has been stolen. You will have a much better chance of dealing with identity theft if you detect it early on, by checking your credit report before the problem gets out of hand. There are also other situations in which it is important to check your credit report.

Perhaps you have had credit problems in the past and you are trying to work your way out of them. Or, perhaps you have excellent credit and would like to keep it that way. By checking your credit report and being aware of what creditors have reported and the accounts that are there, you will be able to rectify your bad credit or maintain your current credit score.

Applying for a loan is another situation where you need to know what is on your credit report. You will want to know what reason a creditor may have for denying you a loan. If you are denied for a loan, it could be something as small as a twenty dollar debt from four years ago. If you are rejected for a loan, you are entitled to pull a free credit report, which you should look over to ensure that all information is correct.

The credit reporting bureau that produces credit reports is not infallible and every once in a while, a human error can pop up in a report. Legally you may challenge a report that you deem to be inaccurate and, because they are required to by law, credit agencies must investigate your complaint.

You have the right to know what your credit report says about you. Whether you are looking into getting a loan, or just trying to make sure your identity has not been stolen, it is important to keep aware of what information is on your credit report.

Don’t pass up your legal right to pull your credit report once a year. Beyond that, if you are looking into getting a loan, attempting to improve your credit score, or just looking out for identity thieves, pull your credit report often enough to make sure your credit information is correct.

What Is Spiritual Personal Development?

You might have read a personal development book within the last year or two. Have you ever read a book on spiritual personal development? What is the difference between the two? Personal development books are also called self-help books. Spiritual personal development is not “self-help.” Spiritual personal development is “God-help.” In that one change of words, from self-help to God-help, is a world of difference.

Spiritual: Spiritual personal development focuses on giving us the tools we need to become mature, spiritual, and productive disciples of Jesus. Spiritual personal development focuses on our spiritual nature. If we feed our spiritual hunger, then the character of God’s Spirit will grow in our hearts.

Personal: First, spiritual growth is a personal matter. Although we live with each other in community, each of us has a personal relationship with God that we must nurture. At the end of the day, each individual disciple is responsible for his or her own spiritual growth. Second, we all grow in different ways. We also grow at different speeds. In this way, spiritual growth is personal.

Development: “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” Luke 2:52 Jesus grew. Growth is good. Since Jesus grew, we need to grow as well. We need to develop into the people that God meant for us to be. God wants us to mature. He is fully committed to helping us grow into solid, mature, fruitful disciples of Jesus.

Do you have a plan for your spiritual personal development? Most of us don’t. This web site will help you develop a plan for your spiritual personal development. It will help you ascertain your spiritual gifts. It will teach you how to make wise, spiritual choices. It will teach you various spiritual disciplines that will help you to connect with God and to feed your spirit. It will help you to set and to achieve spiritual goals in your life.

15 Tricks To Become Attractive Instantly

February 3rd, 2009

In the dating scene, when we are faced with so much rejection and insecurity, it can be easy to give into bad emotions.

We’ll feel we’re doomed to being alone forever because we think we are too fat, ugly, short, old, bald, or whatever it is you feel insecure about.

However, the real issue isn’t that we feel unattractive. It’s that we’re punishing ourselves over our own insecurities! If we give way to these negative thoughts and emotions, its going to be extremely difficult to find someone to date, because no woman wants to be with a man who doesn’t like himself.

This is why, as much as possible, it is important to inject lots of positivity into our lives.

In order to do this, you need to learn how to replace your bad thoughts, with good ones. If you begin to repeat these good thoughts, eventually you’ll train yourself to focus on the positive, rather than the negative.

Every morning after you wake up, and every evening before you go to bed, try and rehearse these positive thoughts in your mind, or out loud…

1. The more I like myself, the more others will like me.

2. I am fully competent and capable in everything that I decide to do.

3. I am highly creative, intelligent, attractive, energetic, witty, smart, healthy, wealthy and wise.

4. I love myself unconditionally just as I am - despite any flaws I may have.

5. I am self-sufficient, and do not rely on the approval of others to feel good about myself.

6. I feel comfortable around other people.

7. Other people like me and enjoy my presence.

8. I am fun and exciting to be with because I always have a good time.

9. I am comfortable talking to women.

10. I am comfortable interacting with women.

11. Women to whom I pay attention are extremely lucky - I am what women want.

12. I do not feel guilty about my desires.

13. I have to look my best all the time.

14. Women must prove themselves worthy of my time and attention in order to receive it. I am the prize.

15. Any woman would be lucky to have a great guy like me in their life.

Some guys might not feel authentic when reciting these positive thoughts. Sometimes, we become so used to negative emotions, they feel more comfortable than the positive ones!

This is about getting used to thinking in a way that bolsters your strength and confidence, rather than tearing yourself down and re-enforcing bad thoughts and feelings. You’re not trying to lie to yourself to feel good, you’re trying to find truths about yourself that actually MAKE you feel good.

If you don’t feel comfortable with any of the above thoughts, then change them so that you do feel comfortable with them. As long as the change re-enforces a positive thought and emotion, it’s acceptable.

Remember that everyone is attracted to positivity. You can’t attract the women you desire if you don’t like who you are! Face it - if you don’t feel you’re someone who deserves to be happy, who else will?

Avoiding Injury Takes Preventable Measures

February 3rd, 2009

Everyone should know injury can happen to anyone at any given time. In most cases you can avoid injury, you just have to think about what you can do to prevent an injury before it happens. Each year more than 400,000 Americans are killed or maimed as a result of preventable injury. More than half of all deaths before the age of 45 are due to injury. Yet we still don’t think it can’t happen to us. Lets go over some injuries that can be preventable:

Seat belts - Driving with your seat belts on can reduce dealth and injury by 75%, but only when people wear them. You should wear seat belts all the time. It doesn’t matter if you’re a driver or passenger. Especially little kids, people tend not to buckle up the kids. Now you should know better than this - mostly children and young adults, die or suffer severe head injury because they neglected to wear seat belts.

Water - Drownings are also usually preventable. You have to use common sense when dealing with water. Watch the kids whether they are in a pool, lake or swimming in the sea. When you’re on a small boat, wear the life preservers. Don’t go boating with impaired captain and its good not to be one yourself.

Fire - Fires are usually preventable tragedies. They’re started by overloaded electrical systems, faulty heaters, smoking in bed, hot ashes in garbage can, careless use of fireworks, playing with matches, inadequate fireplace screenings - all this can be avoidable. Now if you dont have no smoke alarms or fire extinguishers in your home you’re not thinking ahead to prevent a fire. When it comes to a possible fire, think about the probabilities, risks and take action to protect yourself.

Falls - Most broken bones are caused by falls and can be preventable. It could be clutter in your home, maybe nothing to hold onto in the bathroom, poor lighting, are you wearing the right shoes, careless use of a ladder, falls can happen when you use too much alcohol and drugs - all this can be preventable.

Firearms - Man shoots wife. Wife shoots husband. Kid shoots kid. Drunk shoot drunk. These accidents just dont happen. If you have guns in your house, think ahead, consider the risks and probabilities, and take action to ensure that the wrong finger can’t be on the trigger of a loaded gun at the wrong time.

Because we get away with so many risky behaviors, we tend to feel immune from such bad luck ourselves. Just think about when a loved one, friend, or neighbor is killed or maybe crippled, reading about tragedies in the newpapers, we tend not to associate them directly with our own lives. True, there are some unavoidable risks. But we can avoid 90% of our risk by our own actions.

Great Opportunity Awaits You - Lose Weight Now!

February 3rd, 2009

To talk of opportunity when the world is concentrating on survival may sound a little bizarre, but it is not as daft as you think. If you look at the newspapers or look at television news you will hardly be filled with the desire to look for opportunity. Everything you hear and read about will tell you that opportunity has ceased to exist. Luckily, that is far from the truth.

What we need to realize is that what is happening across the world doesn’t happen very often, maybe once in a lifetime - which is just as well! But what we are seeing is a debunking of the ‘old order’, a clearing out of bad practices: a shaming of the greedy, and a powerful spotlight being focused on selfish self-interest.

There is little point in worrying about what has happened. If we concentrate on this too much it will be totally counter-productive. We all know where the blame lies. We need to get our minds on more productive things. We need to be thinking about the world we want to live in. We need to concentrate on creating institutions that will support a just and fair society.

Hopefully we can look forward to a new world order. We all need to be able to work together in the new global economy and we have to have systems that support this. It’s a big readjustment.

This all sounds good, but what has it to do with opportunity? What has it got to do with losing weight? It has implications for both and it’s all to do with change. The world is changing and we must change with it. With change comes opportunity.

One of the manifestations of our unhappiness with the world and with ourselves is the obesity epidemic. It has many different causes, but it serves as an example as to how little attention we have paid to the important things in life. We have become lazy in the way we think and in the way we look after ourselves.

What we all have to do now is to make change. There really isn’t any alternative any more. If we are to survive and prosper, we have to change our ways. We have to become leaner and fitter. If we do then there will be a whole host of opportunities for us to grasp - and we’ll be able to make the best of them.

Making change as far as your weight is concerned is all about identifying your old behaviors and learning new habits, slim habits. This is the way to make real change and achieve permanent weight loss. Answer the challenge and the new world will be your oyster.
