Creating Presentations With PowerPoint’s PhotoAlbum Feature

January 31st, 2009

PowerPoint presentations are a superb tool for getting a message across to an audience, to potential clients and to your own company and images are great for adding impact to a PowerPoint presentation. So much so that PowerPoint includes a feature that lets you automatically create a complete presentation from a group of images.

This technique works best where the images are closely related to the core theme of the presentation, for example, if you are introducing a new product range and you have just loaded a bunch of product images onto your computer.

To get started you need to bring up the New Presentation task pane. To do this, choose File - New. Next, click on “Photo Album” in the New Presentation task pane window.

When the Photo Album window appears, you begin identifying the images you want included in the presentation. You can click on the button marked File/Disk to browse for the images or you can import them straight from your digital camera or scanner.

Your images are imported and listed in alphabetical order. This is almost certainly not the order in which you want them to appear in your presentation. So the next step is to rearrange them by clicking on the arrow icons to move selected images up or down in the list. You can also remove images from the list by clicking the name of the image and clicking the Remove button.

Having got your images in the right order, you can turn your attention to the tonal values in each image. If any of them needs adjustments, you can do one of four operations by clicking the appropriate icon: increase contrast, lower contrast, increase brightness, lower brightness. There are two further icons which allow you to rotate the image clockwise or anti-clockwise.

Not many presentations will consist solely of images. So the next step will be to specify the layout of text and images. The Picture Layout drop-down menu lets you choose one, two or four images per slide either with or without a title and a separate check-box lets you specify whether the title will be displayed below the image or above it.

Next, there is the shape of the image. In the drop-down menu labelled Frame Shape, you can choose rounded rectangle, bevelled, oval, corner tabs, square tabs and plaque tabs. If you don’t want anything fancy, just leave the shape set to the default value of rectangle.

That’s pretty much it. Click OK to exit the Photo Album dialogue box and PowerPoint will go ahead and create your presentation using the images and parameters you just specified. Add some text into the title box on each slide and your presentation is good to go!

Creating Adobe Acrobat PDF Forms

January 31st, 2009

One of the many uses of PDF files is to offer a way for people to gather information via an interactive form. Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional has some nifty features for creating such forms, distributing them and tracking responses.

One of the main advantages of using PDF forms, as against, web-based forms is that the PDF will always look the same regardless of which operating system or web browser is being used.

One also has a wider variety of options when it comes to distributing PDF forms: for example, email, CD or DVD. Email, in particular offers a very direct distribution channel.

Forms are not new to Acrobat: the feature has been available since version 3. However, Acrobat 8 Professional has seen a great enhancement to the way interactive forms are handled.

Forms can be now be created from scratch in Acrobat. Just choose Create New Forms from the Forms menu and choose one of the built-in templates. The form is then created using a utility called Adobe Life Cycle Designer then saved as a PDF file.

When using forms created in other applications as the basis of an Acrobat form, you can now choose “Run Form Field Recognition” form the “Forms” menu and Acrobat will examine the layout of the form and create interactive form fields automatically.

If you wish to use some of your printed forms as starting points for your interactive PDF form, then Acrobat’s Scan From Paper option will offer just what you need.

As well as having Acrobat automatically generate text fields for you, you can add a variety of other controls, such as drop-down menus, tick boxes and radio buttons. Then you finish it off by adding a submit button.

Another new feature in Acrobat 8 is to create a form which allows Acrobat Reader users to save form data when they have filled in the form. (This feature is normally only available with a full version of Acrobat.) To activate this facility, just choose “Enable Usage Rights in Acrobat Reader” from the “Advanced” menu.

Acrobat 8 Professional will allow you to distribute the form to a number of recipients via email. This of requires that you have an email client, such as Microsoft Outlook set up on your machine.

Returned forms are saved in a special Acrobat file called a dataset. When users complete the form and email it back to you, you simply double-click on the attached form. Acrobat opens a special window marked ” Add Completed Form to Data Set”.

To complete your project, after you have received back all the forms you distributed, you simply open the Acrobat dataset and click on the export button to save it as a .csv file. You can then import this file into Microsoft Excel or Access for storage and/or analysis.

Ab Machines-The Truth

January 31st, 2009

Ab machines waste time. These machines will help you strengthen your abdominals, but to achieve ripped abs, ab machines are a waste of time. Increasing your overall metabolism through resistance training, controlling your diet and decreasing stress in one’s life will help you achieve your ripped abs.

There are ab machines that place our bodies in awkward positions causing potential injury, while others actually support our neck and back while doing the exercise, but since the support doesn’t allow those parts to train and get stronger while the abs are getting worked on and stronger simultaneously, there is a resulting imbalance and possible injuries.

Some ab machines don’t even target the ab muscles directly and trains the hip flexor muscles instead!

Watching what we eat is another factor that will help us achieve ripped abs. Avoiding processed foods, fatty foods, fast foods and sodas will help keep your diet balanced and help you control your caloric intake.

When we eat lean proteins and complex carbohydrates instead of fatty fast foods, sodas and sweets, not only can we keep our caloric intake low, but we can also burn calories more efficiently and avoid having excess calories stored as fat especially around the stomach area.

Managing stress is another factor towards acquiring ripped abs. Stress can make the body store fat in the belly area due to Cortisol, a hormone which is produced during stressful times. Thus, controlling stress levels will prevent our body from reacting this way.

Practicing yoga, deep breathing, tai chi and meditation can help manage stress and effectively decrease the storage of body fat in the abdominal area.

Ab machines are a waste of time and really have no effect on achieving ripped abs. To effectively get ripped abs, we must increase our overall metabolism through exercise, diet and decreasing stress in our lives. When we are able to control these factors, we can achieve ripped abs.

Common User Errors in QuarkXPress

January 31st, 2009

If you have recently started using QuarkXPress, you may find yourself making some of the errors outlined in this article. Take a second to read through our top beginner pitfalls and spare yourself a little frustration in getting to grips with your new software.

When creating a new project, many QuarkXPress beginners will pay absolutely no attention to the settings in the New Project dialogue box. These settings are the ones used last time a project was created on that computer. They may or may not be the right settings for the new project you are about to create.

Having set margins when creating a new project, many new QuarkXPress users will still feel inclined to position their text and picture boxes inside the margin guides, leaving an extra space. Remember, the blue lines represent the margin guides not the edges of the page. Normally, the edges of your text boxes will need to be positioned on the margin rather then inside them.

There are two main ways of aligning elements on a QuarkXPress page: ruler guides and measurements. Most new QuarkXPress users are seduced by the ease with which guides can be created (just drag them onto the page from either the horizontal or vertical ruler) and end up with a page covered in these green guides. Guides are very useful but it is often just as easy to change the X and Y measurements of elements. Making the X measurements the same aligns left edges, Y aligns top edges. The measurements window will also perform basic calculations for you. For example, to double the gap to the left of a text box, just tye “*2″ (i.e. multiplied by 2) after the current X value and press Enter.

Incorrect use of guides is another basic error frequently encounter among QuarkXPress users. A typical scenario is where you want to create a new element and align it with something that’s already on the page. So you drag a guide onto the page and align it with the existing element. Then you create your second element and snap it to the guide. This means that only the first element is actually aligned with the guide. Remember, the snap is what makes guides useful. So dragging a guide and aligning it to the edge of a box by eye won’t do. You need to go back to the first element and ensure that it too is snapped onto the guide.

The automatic text box feature in QuarkXPress can be activated when creating a new project: you just click on the check-box marked “Automatic Text Box”. It allows us to go into something approaching word processing mode. It should be used when creating multi-page documents consisting mainly of text such as a report or book.

The automatic text box feature is great for long documents. However, you will often see QuarkXPress users activating this option when creating short documents or even documents consisting of a single page. They make the assumption that all the feature does is to save them the trouble of creating a text box. In fact, if the text box ever becomes filled with text (which can easily happen as you experiment with different text formats), a new page is immediately generated and your single page document becomes a two page document.

The text box tool can also be a source of confusion among people who have recently started using QuarkXPress. The text box tool is used to create text boxes. It can’t be used for anything else. However, you will often see new users attempting to use it to edit the text within the box. In fact, the content tool is the only tool which can be used to edit text.

You will also often see new users attempting to edit text or move a picture inside a picture box when the Item tool is highlighted. This is a non-starter since the contents of a box can only be edited with the content tool. Admittedly, most users will eventually realise this if only through trial and error.

You will often see new QuarkXPress users highlighting the Item tool when resizing text or picture boxes. This is not necessary since resizing a box can be done whether the item or content tool is selected.

Beginners tend to create a lot more text boxes than they actually need. They’ll create a box for a heading, another for the sub heading and so on. Actually, you can change your formatting within the same QuarkXPress text box as many times as you like. There is no need to create a new box each time the format changes. You only really need separate boxes where there are attributes which can’t exist within the same box such as the number of columns.

Focusing on the box rather than the content is another basic error made by inexperienced QuarkXPress users. Unless the user specifies otherwise, QuarkXPress text and picture boxes do not print. Only their contents will actually print. However, many users insist on carefully vertically centring the text within a box forgetting that, to all intents and purposes, there is no box there. The solution to this one is F7 (a shortcut for View - Guides) which hides margin and ruler guides as well as the frame normally shown around text and picture boxes.

How Does a Plasma Cutter Work

January 31st, 2009

Steel and other metals constitute the fiber of many industrial metals. This requires steel and the metals to be blended, fused, cut, welded. Plasma cutting is the method more generally used for the purpose. Plasma cutting uses an inert or a noble gas and compressed air blowing out of the nozzle at great pace. The gases at high pressure blow at an appreciable speed towards the metal surface. Quite at the same time, an electric arc is being produced between the nozzle and the surface of metal. This causes the conversion of gas into plasma. Plasma being very hot melts the metal. At the same time, it is very quick as well and hence guides the molten metal away.

Plasma is a dangerous entity. It is blessed with power huge enough to turn skin to shreds. Thus it becomes extremely important to guard yourself adequately. Use proper welding gloves, welding masks and welding helmets. While the gloves and helmet will protect you against any contact from the plasma or inert gas or electric arc, the mask will safeguard you from poisoning that might happen due to plasma. Sometimes metals and plasma react and result in a definite mixture which might be poisonous. Protective clothing thus becomes very important while dealing with such torch bodies.

Fuel gases and oxygen (Oxy-acetylene welding) are also used quite a lot for cutting metals, their industrial use is being cut down and they are being substituted by plasma cutting, TIG and MIG welding and other processes but they are still frequently used for cutting tubes and pipes. Oxy-acetylene welding is not only used for iron welding but also used for braze welding and metal heating. Oxy-acetylene welding results in the fusion of two different pieces of metals through the shared pool of molten metal at their center. Oxy-acetylene welders use a couple of tanks for the purpose of welding and cutting.

Oxy acetylene flame is used for glass industry, jewelry making industry, a stone work, artifact making, sculpture making among other uses. Two pressure regulators and a couple of flexible hoses are all that may be required. Acetylene is the primary fuel which comes in specially designed cylinders packed with porous materials.

TIG welding or Tungsten Inert Gas welding is a very capable procedure. Even this one creates an arc of electricity between the welding metal and the nozzle. It uses non-consumable tungsten which is safeguarded against fast oxidation by the presence of a noble gas. Argon is the most formal choice as it disables creation of any slag. Such slag can be quite harmful for the flux. Welding heat that results from TIG welding causes the build-up of a confined zone of heat. This prevents the cracking or breaking of metal. Further, the TIG welding torch is quite small and looks like a pencil. It s thus fairly easy to be used and can be used for precision cutting tasks.

MIG welding or Metal Inert Gas welding uses a consumable electrode. It causes spatter and there is also slag. This dilutes the flux and the spatter makes viewing difficult for the operator. The wire made by MIG welding is tougher than TIG welding and is hence more difficult to be hammered.

Brands like Thermadyne, Hypertherm, Lincoln Electric, Esab and Miller are doing great plasma work. Miller Spectrum 625 plasma cutter uses wind funnel method that prevents any possible harm to the inner parts caused due to abrasive dust. The volt drops are lessened and ampere count is minimized too for similar cutting range. The machines can also be extended for a larger work area. Miller machines are good for fabrication, maintenance, auto body and prototyping.

The Most Common Mistakes Made By Microsoft Word Users

January 31st, 2009

Everybody knows Microsoft Word. It’s on almost every PC in the world and fair few Macs as well. However, a lot of users have picked up bad habits, things that detract from the usefulness of the document being created. This article looks at the most common basic errors among Microsoft users.

* When creating a document to be printed on a particular type of stationery, such as letter-headed paper, many Word users have the habit of using the Return key to create space at the start of the document. What they should be doing is changing the top margin. To change the margins in Word 2007, click on Margins then Custom Margins in the Page Layout tab on the ribbon. In previous versions of Word, choose Page Setup from the File menu.

* A lot of Word users have the habit of entering two spaces after a full-stop. This is a recommendation that used to apply when typewriters were being used with monospace typefaces such as Courier. With the advent of word processors, and now computers, the two space rule is redundant because electronically generated fonts are proportionally spaced and it’s easy for the eye to pick out the end of each sentence.

* A lot of Word users also like to press the Return key twice after each paragraph. This tends to create too much space. It’s better to use just one Return then adjust the paragraph spacing by choosing Format - Paragraph (in Word 2003 and earlier) or clicking on the Page Layout tab (in Word 2007) and entering the desired amount in the box marked Spacing After.

* People who have never had any formal Microsoft Word training can perhaps be forgiven for not fully understanding how tabs work. You will even see some users attempting to align elements by using the space bar and, of course, when they print the document, nothing is properly aligned. As experienced users will know, the Tab key should be used; not the space bar.

* Although you can get away with pressing the Tab key to create columns of text without actually setting any tabs, it’s not usually a good idea. This method uses Word’s default tabs and means that the user often inserts a varying number of tabs between columns. It’s much better to set up your own tabs by clicking on the Word ruler. That way, you will only ever need to press the Tab key once between columns.

* A lot of newbie Word users will always format their documents, even long ones, either manually or by using the Format Painter. The best way to format text in long documents is to use Microsoft styles. Each style has multiple attributes associated with it which are applied automatically to any text formatted with that style. In addition, if the attributes of a style are changed, all text in that style is updated throughout the document.

* Word AutoCorrect and other text optimisation features can sometimes seem a bit too much to some users but many people do nothing to adjust the way these features work. In Word 2007, the AutoCorrect and other settings can be changed at any time by clicking on the Office Button and choosing Word Options. The equivalent in Word 2003 and earlier is Tools - Options.

What Is Your Opinion About Fire Extinguisher Safety?

January 31st, 2009

Did you get to adulthood and realise that you know nothing about how to use a fire extinguisher? That is the case with so many people, especially those in the older generation. The older generation did not have the exposure to the use of fire extinguishers that there is today, nor were they exposed to the method of using a fire extinguisher.

If you are in the 60+ bracket, the suggestion would be that you make yourself familiar with the use of a fire extinguisher.

As you get older it is harder to learn about new things, but also as you get older you get more careless and more forgetful. Not only that, you move more slowly, and sometimes more clumsily, so if you had to get out of a fire you are not as nimble as you used to be.

A FORGETFUL MEMORY

with a forgetful memory you may not remember to go back to the stove to attend to something cooking with fat

you may leave a cigarette burning

a heater too close to an open window and curtain, or

leave the heater on all night unattended

not work the clothes dryer properly and have a fire

You could be a really busy person and go rushing out the door forgetting something. There are many reasons why a poor memory could cause a fire.

NOT AS AGILE AS YOU USED TO BE

as you get older you are slower getting out of a chair

you nod off at irregular times

you trip over more easily

you dont hear quite the same as you used to

any one of these experiences can stop you from containing a fire as fast as you might have in the past.

It may be none of these reasons that put your life in danger, but there is one sure thing, if you have a fire extinguisher in your home, and you know how to use it, you have a much better chance of containing any sort of flair up.

All your life you have worked to get safely to your older age, and it is time to enjoy it. You dont want to have a life threatening disaster like a fire, just because you did not have a fire extinguisher on hand.

If you are reading this article, and have a parent in the latter years, and they do not have a fire extinguisher, do them and yourself a favour, buy them one and teach them how to use it. Attach it to the wall near the exit door and put an Instructions sign right beside it.

What are Wall Decals, Wall Stickers and Clings?

January 31st, 2009

You may be tired of the look of your room or your kids room. You can give it a new appearance and change the wall designs or the wallpaper of their rooms by using wall decals, wall stickers, or clings. You can also choose different wall decals for the rest of the rooms in your entire house.

Wall decals are simply a wall “stick on” that will easily come off. Rest assured, they are not like regular decals/stickers that are made to stick to anything forever and also leave a residue. Wall decals or wall stickers have a specially formulated adhesive that is not permanent and can be removed without damaging your wall or leaving a nasty gob of glue behind. Many wall decals are made of vinyl so they may be water resistant or water proof as well.

Clings are also another kind of decoration but are different from the wall decal and wall stickers because they do not have adhesives. Due to the lack of adhesive windows and mirrors or other glass surfaces are best place to place clings.

Using the wallpaper for your wall decorations will demand more effort and time in installing. And if you want to remove it, another hard work is required to be able to clear the wall of its residue. It can also damage the wall or its paintings, which means you still need to repair the damaged area.

Wall decals, also known by other names such as wall stickers, room decals, removable wall decals/stickers, vinyl decals/stickers, removable murals, peel and stick, and many other names, are much more affordable than traditional remodeling projects. The cost and hassle involved in repainting a room can be overwhelming. Moving furniture out, patching holes, primer- the list goes on. With removable wall decals, you simply peel and stick. Voila! Room re-done.

The wall vinyl decals and stickers come in different colors and designs that your kids will surely enjoy and appreciate. They can choose their own designs. Some of the available designs are the letters of the alphabet, the shapes, cartoon themes, inspiring words, and many more.

Walls aren’t the only place you can use wall stickers. Decorate your furniture, dresser, book case, kitchen cabinets, mouldings, mirrors, windows, toybox, laptop or any item you would like to personalize with the design of your choice. If you are a renter and are not allowed to paint, these are the perfect alternative. Your child can still enjoy the benefits of ‘paint’ without breaking the landlord’s rules. Some designs are great for college student dorm rooms too.

Your new wall colors and designs using the wall decals and stickers depend on your own unique imagination. You can use the designs wherever you think they are appropriate such as the kids rooms, play area, library, study area, and many more.

Use them for bedrooms or childcare play centers. Designate areas of the house or daycare, such as ‘reading area’, ‘resting room’, etc. This simple and inexpensive design will give the appearance of a professional design without the cost of a professional painter or muralist. The typical cost for decorating a space is under fifty dollars.

Your kids will surely enjoy your work of art. You too will enjoy the new appearance of their rooms. Who knows, you might use some for your own room. You can make your own designs by combining different wall decal designs of colors and shapes. You can even change your decorations and designs as often as you wish to because these wall decals, wall stickers, and clings are really affordable and easy to use.
